Guardians of Nature was founded in September 2022 by one of our residents, Afka, and the group based in Alderfield, Penwortham, now has 12 volunteers from the community.
The team of volunteers have worked together to regenerate a disused allotment to return to the community and are supporting residents and local youths through Community Education to give them a better understanding of where produce comes from, and how to plant and grow their own food through the allotment.
Guardians of Nature have two teams made up of children, young adults, and adults, who meet up regularly to clean up the streets and green spaces through organised litter-picking walks, supported by South Ribble Borough Council - all based from the allotment.
This team of volunteers is called 'The Waste Warriors'.
A young resident named Lexi, aged nine, came to Alderfield Allotment and asked if she could create a team for the youth litter pickers for the Alderfield estate. The team at Guardians of Nature were overjoyed to help and so 'Mini Waste Warriors' was born!
Afka said, "These are now our most-attended events. We’re overwhelmed by the support of the local children who attend fortnightly and are keen to clean up their estate in Alderfield, Penwortham.
“The children are learning about the importance of keeping the environment clean for our local wildlife and supporting us in creating beautiful spaces for all of the residents to enjoy.
“Thank you to Your Housing Group for the “It’s in Your Hands” funding and to Jane Hawthorne and David Flanagan for helping us to clear and take away the shrubbery."
