Today we're supporting End Digital Poverty Day organised by Digital Poverty Alliance.

Digital poverty means not having the ability to interact with the online world because the use of phones, tablets and computers are difficult to use, or near impossible.

Digital Poverty Day aims to raise awareness and build a community were we can put a stop to digital poverty in the UK.

Last year, we launched a course of ICT sessions for some of our Cantonese speaking residents who live at Faulkner Court, Manchester.

The sessions were delivered by our partners at the Wai Yin Society, who support and empower Chinese individuals and families. The sessions aimed to provide our residents with the skills and knowledge so that they have the confidence to access online services whilst also being aware of online safety.

Many topics were covered such as:

- Learning about online banking
- Understanding the basic functions of digital tablets
- Social media and communicating online
- Staying safe online

The sessions have recently come to an end with a final celebration were each resident who completed the course received a certificate.

The course was very well received by our residents who developed their online knowledge and have expressed their eagerness to continue.

91% of the residents who joined the session said that they now have more confidence in using tablet devices after completing the course.

73% of residents said they now have more awareness of online safety.

Our resident, Mrs Y said “I have enjoyed the course and have learnt a lot through the patient support of the tutors and volunteers, I hope that I can remember all that they have taught us and will try to continue learning.”
